Alberbury young farmers are children’s hospital heroes
Alberbury YFC has been announced as one of Birmingham Children’s Hospital Top 100 Heroes following their epic fundraising success last year.
The Shropshire club raised over £25,000 after completing a mammoth cycle challenge taking them around the entire perimeter of Wales. In recognition of their achievement club members have been invited to attend Birmingham Children’s Hospital 100 Heroes’ Afternoon Tea on Sunday 19 May.
It took the club seven days to complete their charity fundraiser last year, where they covered around 100 miles a day during one of the hottest weeks in June on record.
The mission to raise money for the hospital pushed the riders both physically and mentally as they took on some of the most challenging terrain in the UK.
Melissa Evans from the club said “jelly babies, countless costal tyre changes and the support of family and friends” saw them through the challenge. She added: “It’s an honour to support Birmingham Children’s Hospital, a charity that couldn’t be more deserving.”The Afternoon tea event will pay tribute to the wonderful fundraisers who have challenged themselves, exceeded expectations and been an inspiration to many, throughout 2018. Alberbury YFC’s achievements will also be commemorated on a special red balloon at the front of the hospital for the next 12 months.

A Mystical themed Shropshire Show
This years Shropshire Show top table comprised of Tom Pedge as Chair, Katie Williams as Secretary and Ollie Gittins as Treasurer.
Shropshire young farmers wowed spectators at this year’s Shropshire Show with their witches and wizard themed marquee. Members from the 18 different clubs in Shropshire filled the tent with their magical themed entries which ranged from cake decorating and flower arranging to making the tallest broomstick and the best scrap metal monster.
It was a spectacular display of what our members from as young as 10 to as experienced as 26 can do. There was even a Unicorn in the form of a miniature Shetland Pony called Spud and a real Wizard welcoming everyone into the marquee.
A new addition to the show was an active cookery competition where the members could show off their culinary skills. The public could play Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood as they watched the chefs create amazing dishes.
Last but not least was the much anticipated float competition which had the theme of magical movies and had to be pulled by tractors which were pre 1990’s. It was great to see so many clubs take part especially Bridgnorth YFC who have not entered a float for many years. Wem were crowned the winners with their Harry potter themed float which included a fire breathing dragon. Dorrington’s Frozen themed float came Second and Rea valley’s Pirates of the Caribbean float won a trophy for the best smallest club float.
The Shropshire Show committee held an after dance to celebrate everyone hard work. It was a UV paint and glitter Dance at the Cattle Market in Shrewsbury. The attendance was fantastic and everyone went home full of sparkle.
Competitions success: meet Shropshire YFC’s Senior Member of the Year finalist!
Our very own Lucy Bright from Clun Valley YFC in Shropshire is one of the seven members who will be competing in the finals of the Senior Member of the Year Competition on Saturday in Blackpool.
After tough competition Lucy came first in both the Shropshire round and West Midland Area rounds. This means she is now off to the big stage in Blackpool to compete in this esteemed competition. She will now go forward to take part in private interviews with a panel of judges as well as stage interviews during the Performing Arts finals. The winner will be declared on Sunday during the Annual General Meeting.
Find out below what Lucy loves about YFC and why she feels she should be successful in this competition.
Name: Lucy Bright
Age: 25
Club: Clun Valley, Shropshire
What I love about YFC:
Everything! Young Farmers is a truly incredible and unique organisation that has not only given me friends for life but also essential skills and opportunities. From ballroom dancing and public speaking to carol singing for charity, there is no doubt that these experiences have shaped me as a person and given me the confidence and determination to achieve my goals. In addition, I love that Young Farmers is run by the members, for the members, who share one thing in common: ‘a love for agriculture and rural life’. This is the perfect recipe for a group of young people that are creative, encouraging, excellent team players and most importantly fun! I have memories in Young Farmers that will last a lifetime and for that I am sincerely grateful.
Why I should win Senior Member of the Year:
It was not until writing my synopsis for this competition that I realised how much I had achieved in Young Farmers and I truly believe I have made the most of the opportunities that Young Farmers has to offer. Having been a member since the age of 14, I have certainly put endless nights, time and effort into Young Farmers, especially with competitions and organising functions, but what I have gained from the experience has been invaluable. This is why I now feel extremely passionate about being an ambassador for my federation. I hope that by nurturing and supporting younger members to achieve their potential and really show them what can be accomplished with dedication, hard work and motivation, I can encourage more young people into the YFC movement. I feel honoured to have made it to the final of this prestigious competition; winning would simply be more than I could have dreamed of.
Best of luck Lucy, we will all be there cheering you on! For anyone wanting to come along and support Lucy the competition will be taking place at The Opera House in Blackpool, curtains up at 2pm.

BROWN CLEE WIN AT SOUTHERN AREA!
A huge congratulations to Brown Clee YFC who represented Shropshire at the Southern Area round of Intermediate Just a Minute in Gloucester on Saturday.
The team sailed through the Shropshire round and at West Midlands Area too showcasing the amazing talent in the team. Two of the members, Nancy Rollings and Annabelle Beaman have both had success before with this competition and have shown enormous dedication every time they compete. It was the first time Molly Abbiss a Junior member at the age of 13, had gone on to represent her club at such a high level. The judges were very impressed by her confidence and speaking from a junior member in this intermediate competition. Max Porter was the only boy on the team but he did a sterling job of keeping the girls in line!
Shropshire YFC is so proud of all the team for working so hard, training and going on to represent the county. It is a fantastic achievement for them all and to come away with first place is simply delightful! Brown Clee will now go on to the NATIONAL FINALS on SATURDAY 30TH JUNE at Staffordshire Showground.
